Police: Girl, 13, shot on Florida school bus

A 13-year-old girl was shot on a school bus Tuesday morning and a male suspect is in custody, a spokesperson with the Miami-Dade police told NBC News.

The suspect's age and whether he is a fellow student was not made public.

The injured student, who was airlifted to Miami Children's Hospital, was on a private school bus en route to Somerset Academy Silver Palms when the shooting happened, Javier Baez, spokesperson for the Miami-Dade Police Department, said.

"We're still trying to get word on her condition," Baez told NBC News on Tuesday.

The shooting happened in the area of Southwest 296th Street and Southwest 137th Avenue in Homestead, a city in Miami-Dade County, reported NBCMiami.com

Somerset Academy Silver Palms is a kindergarten-through-12th grade free charter school in Miami-Dade County. A banner on the school's website read, "At this time we are aware there's a community situation, Somerset Silver Palms is in normal education mode."
