Train hits veterans' trailer in parade; 4 dead

By NBC News staff

A train crashed into a tractor-trailer carrying wounded veterans in a parade in Midland, Texas, killing at least four, according to local media reports.

NBC station KWES of Midland said the tractor-trailer was part of the Show of Support / Hunt for Heroes parade honoring veterans. The parade preceded a benefit dinner for Show of Support, Military Hunt Inc. in Midland on Thursday night, according to the organization's website.

Show of Support president and founder Terry Johnson told the Midland Reporter-Telegram that a Union Pacific train slammed into a trailer that was on its way to the wounded veterans event about 5 p.m. Thursday.

He says there are "multiple, multiple" injuries and organizers still are trying to account for everyone.

KEWS and the newspaper reported that four people were killed. The association told The Associated Press that 17 were hospitalized.

According the website, the organization demonstrates support for members of the military and seeks to bring public awareness of hunting and fishing.
