A man has been charged with the so-called 'backpage murders' in which the bodies of four women were found in car trunks in Detroit last December.

James Brown, 24, of Sterling Heights, said little during a brief arraignment Monday on four counts of first-degree murder. He's due back in court Jan. 9.

Brown's lawyer Jeffrey Cojocar, who entered the pleas on behalf of Brown, says his client maintains he didn't kill the women.

Nobody from the prosecutor's office was immediately available for comment when contacted by NBC News.

He had previously been charged with disinterment and mutilation of a dead body and arson, but not murder.

The bodies of 24-year-old Demesha Hunt and 23-year-old Renisha Landers were found Dec. 19, 2011 in separate car trunks in Detroit. The bodies of Natasha Curtis and Vernithea McCrary were found Christmas Day in the trunk of a burning car.

Three of the women had placed adult dating service ads on website Backpage.com.
