Girl shot on Florida school bus dies, cops say

A 13-year-old girl who was shot on a school bus Tuesday morning has died, Miami-Dade police said.

A male student is in custody in the shooting. The suspect's age was not made public.

The victim, also a student, had been airlifted to Miami Children's Hospital. She was on a private school bus en route to Somerset Academy Silver Palms when the shooting happened, Javier Baez, spokesperson for the Miami-Dade Police Department, said.

The incident occurred in the area of Southwest 296th Street and Southwest 137th Avenue in Homestead, a city in Miami-Dade County, reported NBCMiami.com

Somerset Academy Silver Palms is a kindergarten-through-12th grade free charter school in Miami-Dade County. A banner on the school's website read, "At this time we are aware there's a community situation, Somerset Silver Palms is in normal education mode."
