(CNN) -- As authorities in nine states tallied the devastation brought by Superstorm Sandy and struggled to restore basic services early Thursday, the human toll mounted.

At least 56 people in the United States and one in Canada died during the storm, raising Sandy's overall death toll to 124 after earlier claiming 67 lives in the Caribbean.

It is unknown exactly how many are unaccounted for in the aftermath of the storm. There are numerous reports in New York, New Jersey and elsewhere of ongoing search efforts for people reportedly swept away or missing.

Among those killed by Sandy were 28 in New York. "Tragically we expect that number to go up," New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg told reporters Wednesday.

The body of 13-year-old girl was pulled from the debris of a house in New York's Staten Island that was swallowed by a tidal surge when Sandy swept ashore, authorities told CNN affiliate WCBS on Wednesday. Her father was among those reported missing, SILive.com reported.

Sandy came ashore late Monday in southern New Jersey, wiping out houses, pushing sand four blocks inland in places and leaving thousands stranded.

Sandy battered towns beyond recognition

Search and rescue crews were going door-to-door in some neighborhoods looking for people, particularly the elderly, stranded by the power outages, the debris and remaining floodwaters.

Sandy killed at least six people in the Garden State, said Gov. Chris Christie, who had warned people in low-lying areas to evacuate. "We're lucky that more people didn't die as a result of folks ignoring those warnings," he told reporters.

A number of deaths were caused by the storm surge, downed electrical lines and cold weather.

Electricity or not: A tale of two cities

The Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, coroner attributed the death of an elderly woman to hypothermia after she was found unconscious in her yard, CNN affiliate WHTM in Harrisburg reported.

Theresa Schlitzer, 86, died Tuesday after spending nearly 12 hours outside in the storm, the coroner told WHTM. Details about why Schlitzer was outside and how she became incapacitated were not immediately available.

Boats were washed onto front yards in the Staten Island neighborhood of Great Kills. Borough President James Molinaro said the waters have mostly receded, but the damage is severe. Several people, including two young boys, are missing.

Among those also reported missing were two boys, ages 2 and 4, who were separated from their mother when the SUV they were riding in was overwhelmed by the storm surge that struck New York's Staten Island, authorities told CNN affiliate NY1.

The mother and two boys escaped the SUV that was quickly filling with water only to be overtaken by the storm surge.

"She had them in her arms, and a wave came and swept them out of her arms," a family member told the New York Daily News.

Engineers: Dangling crane tied securely to building

Commuters, homeowners and businesses, meanwhile, struggled with the loss of power and waterlogged or burned homes.

Many are still in need of basic supplies. President Barack Obama visited a shelter Wednesday in Brigantine, New Jersey, where he said he met a woman with an 8-month-old who has run out of diapers and formula.

"Those are the kinds of basic supplies and help that we can provide," he said.

Obama promised the federal government "will not quit" until communities are cleaned up.

"We are not going to tolerate red tape, we are not going to tolerate bureaucracy," Obama said. "And I've instituted a 15-minute rule, essentially, on my team. You return everybody's phone calls in 15 minutes, whether it's the mayor's, the governor's, county officials.

"If they need something, we figure out a way to say yes."

Mobile networks team up to help stranded

Christie asked for patience as crews worked to turn the power back on for more than 2 million people still in the dark. He toured the hard-hit town of Brigantine on Wednesday with Obama, who said utilities from across the country have pledged to send crews to New Jersey as soon as possible.

By early Thursday, the remnants of Superstorm Sandy headed north through Canada, with the last of its effects beginning to wind down along the Appalachian Mountains, according to the National Weather Service.

The storm brought 2 to 3 feet of snow to some areas in West Virginia and Maryland, leaving thousands without power. Several more inches of snow are possible in some areas before the storm ends later this week, the weather service said.

A little less than 4.9 million customers across the eastern United States were still in the dark early Thursday, down from the nearly 8 million who lost power shortly after the storm hit.

CNN's Joe Sterling and Melissa Grey contributed to this report.

Officials say 336,000 gallons of diesel fuel spilled into the waters between Staten Island and New Jersey after a storage tank was lifted and ruptured from the surge from Sandy.

All of the spilled fuel is believed to be contained by booms put in the Arthur Kill waterway, the Coast Guard says.

The liquid leaked at the Motiva oil tank facility in Woodbridge, N.J., according to authorities.

Coast Guard spokesman Les Tippets says a secondary tank caught most of the fuel and that the liquid that escaped moved into the Arthur Kill.

New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection spokesman Larry Ragonese says the company reported the spill and hired contractors to clean it up.

Air samples collected by the Coast Guard at Arthur Kill showed levels within acceptable thresholds Wednesday.

(CNN) -- Roots ripped out of the ground as the large oak tree fell toward Olga Raymond's front door. With it came a power line.

Raymond had just left her one-story home in Mansfield, Connecticut. Neighbors told CNN affiliate CTNOW that a smaller pine tree had already snapped off onto Raymond's roof, startling her. She had a flashlight in hand and was on her way to a neighbor's house when the bigger tree crashed down.

The 90-year-old woman -- a "spirited" bowler and grandmother of four -- was killed instantly.

Across the Northeast, stories just like Raymond's were reported again and again. Another tree, another town, another broken home.

And the death toll from Superstorm Sandy climbed.

Sandy battered the coast with 90-mph winds, leaving more than 115 dead from Haiti to Canada. At least 50 were killed in the United States. Many were believed to be safely holed up in their homes.

"When Mother Nature sends her wrath your way, we're at her mercy, and so all we can do is stay prayerful and do the best that we can," Atlantic City Mayor Lorenzo Langford told CNN.

'All-star' angels

Shortly before her younger brother was killed, Ashley Robson was weathering Superstorm Sandy like many others in New York.

"Collecting rain that is coming through the roof #thankssady (sic) #couldbedoingsomethingsomuchbetter," the teen tweeted on Monday night at 5:52 p.m.

Less than two hours later, Michael Robson, 13, and his friend Jack Baumler, 11, were killed by a 100-foot oak tree that crashed into the family room where they were seeking shelter.

The small suburban town of North Salem is now in mourning.

"Waking up this morning and realizing it wasn't just a bad dream... My love prayers go out to both families #ripjackandmichael," Camilla Fay tweeted Tuesday.

"My heart is breaking a thousand times over," Talyah Fae posted.

Baumler and Robson used to play basketball near their homes on Bonnieview Street. Neighbors and friends told The Journal News that they were good kids and good friends.

"Heaven got two all-stars too soon," Baumler's uncle, Daniel Seymour, said.

Russell Neary, 55, a lieutenant with the volunteer fire department in Easton, Connecticut, was killed on Monday night while responding to a call, according to CNN affiliate CTNOW.com. Debris blocked his truck's route on Judd Road; he was working to clear a path when a tree limb struck him.

"It was a line of duty death," Easton Fire Chief James Girardi told NewsTimes.com. "It's the first one we've ever had. And we're not over the shock of it. His death is a tremendous loss to his family, our department and the community."

NYPD officer Artur Kasprzak may have been off-duty on Monday night, but he was hard at work saving the lives of those in a house on Doty Avenue in Breezy Point, New York.

With flood water "surging" into his house, Kasprzak was able to shepherd six adults and a 1-year-old child into the attic, according to the NYPD spokesman James Duffy.

Around 7:30 p.m., he told one of the adults he was going back down to check the basement. When he didn't return, someone called 911.

"NYPD personnel from the Emergency Service and SCUBA units immediately responded to the residence using Zodiac boats and Jet Skis," the spokesman said, "but could not access the home due to down, electrified power lines in the water."

Officers discovered Kasprzak's body "unconscious and unresponsive" the next morning.

Trapped

At 7:38 p.m. on Monday night, Mendham Township police received a 911 call about a car accident on North Gate Road.

Richard Everett was driving with his wife Elizabeth and two of their children when a 100-foot tall, 3-foot wide tree fell on the hood of his pickup truck.

By the time officers arrived, the children, aged 11 and 14, had managed to free themselves from the wreck. Their parents were still trapped inside.

Two passersby stopped to help police officers as they worked to free the Everetts from the crushed cab. Soon after the fire department and first aid squad arrived to help.

Despite rescuers best efforts, the couple died at the scene.

"My thoughts and prayers to the Everett family," @CoreyJett tweeted. "Horrible tragedy no one should ever go through. We're all with you in this terrible time RIP."
