One person died and dozens were hurt Thursday morning when around 100 vehicles crashed in heavy fog along Interstate 10 near Beaumont, Texas, the Texas Highway Patrol told NBC News.

The exact number of those injured in the multiple crashes was still being determined, said Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Stephanie Davis.

The chain-reaction accidents happened over a two-mile stretch between Taylor's Bayou and Hampshire Road. Both directions were closed for several hours before westbound lanes were reopened. Eastbound lanes were still closed.

The DPS said there was dense fog in the area at the time of the initial crash, which happened at around 8:45 a.m. local time (9:45 a.m. ET).
